Giulia Savarese, Luna Carpinelli and Daniela D’Elia (University of Salerno, Psychology): “Narrating childhood violence: trauma, memory, and multilevel clinical narratives of adverse childhood experiences”
Drawing on clinical and empirical research on childhood traumatic experiences, this talk explores the role of narrative as both a medium of memory integration and a potential site of ethical tension in the representation of extreme violence. Focusing on the dialectic between intrusive memories and avoidance, it examines how fragmentation, silence, repetition, and delayed narration mirror underlying cognitive–affective mechanisms of trauma. The contribution discusses narrative as a performative space where individual suffering may become collectively intelligible without being domesticated or aestheticised. Finally, it reflects on the limits of narration in trauma processing and on the risks of instrumentalisation when personal accounts enter the public sphere.
